How to Use Underpads for Bed Protection and Patient Care

Underpads are an essential tool for providing comfort and maintaining hygiene in bed-bound or incontinent patients. They offer protection to the bed, mattresses, and linens from moisture, making them a crucial part of patient care. Here's a simple guide on how to use them effectively:

1. Choose the Right Size and Absorbency

Selecting the appropriate size and absorbency is key. Underpads come in various sizes to fit different bed types, and absorbency levels vary based on the patient’s needs. For patients with heavy incontinence, opt for high-absorbency pads.

2. Place the Underpad Correctly

Ensure the underpad is placed smoothly under the patient’s body, covering the area most likely to experience leaks. The soft, absorbent side should face up, while the waterproof backing goes against the bed to prevent any leakage.

3. Change Regularly

Change the underpad as needed, depending on the level of incontinence. For patients with heavy leakage, replace the underpad every few hours to prevent skin irritation and maintain hygiene.

4. Ensure Comfort and Skin Protection

Be mindful of skin health. Regularly check the patient’s skin for signs of irritation and ensure the underpad is not causing discomfort.

5. Dispose of Properly

Once the underpad has been used, dispose of it immediately to maintain cleanliness and prevent odor. Underpads are single-use products, so proper disposal is important.

Using underpads properly ensures that both the patient and caregiver benefit from a more comfortable, hygienic environment, reducing the risk of skin damage and promoting overall well-being.

Do you currently use underpads for patient care, or are you considering them for a new setting?
